One of the things that surprises people is that a tattoo needle is not usually a single needle but is normally at least 3 needles used in conjunction with one and other. The needles are placed in a specific pattern to achieve a specific result. Once the needles are placed in the tattoo machine and configured properly they are called sharps.
Usually not more than 7 needles will be used at one time. And it is rare that one will be used by itself. 7 needles is a possibility for heavy shading, but more needles means more pain and more blood, which can make it hard to work. One needle may be used for very fine lines but normally one is not enough.
Most tattoo artist consider the needle to be the most important part of the process because this is the instrument that actually comes into contact with the customer. Needles are so important that most artists change them between each tattoo, not just for sanitary reasons but also for precision. Tattoo needles are sold in bulk and are fairly cheap so this is fairly practical.
Tattoo needles must actually soldered onto the tattoo machine. Usually tattoo artists will have two machines set up to do a specific tattoo ahead of time. One machine will be a liner and the other will be a shader. It is the needle configuration that makes the difference. The shader being set up in a round shape and the liner being set up in a straight fashion.
If you are in the market for a tattoo you need to make sure that the tattoo parlor you are considering is up to snuff. Most parlors are up to standard but many attempt to do more than meet minimum health requirements. I suggest spending the extra money to go to a parlor that is above average. You are after all investing in body art that will last a life time. And, last but not least make sure that your tattoo artist is using fresh tattoo needles.
