Gold Jewellery
Tired of gold costume jewellery and want to purchase a piece of real gold jewellery? It is important for you to understand the meaning of the word karat in relation to gold jewellery. The purity of a piece of gold is measured in terms of Karats and also in terms of fineness (that is considered the European Marking). 100% pure gold is 24 Karats or 1000 fineness. The process of figuring out exactly what a Karat is becomes easier to understand when you think of gold as an alloy (or a combination of a variety of metals). In this sense, the karats refer to the percentage of pure gold that is contained in the alloy. You can therefore determine the percent of pure gold in a piece of gold jewelry by taking the karat and dividing it by 24 (an example is 18K gold: 18/24=0.750=75% pure gold).
