Deciding on a Mother’s Day Gift for Your Mom

Mother’s Day is one of the most special days of the year.  More telephone calls are placed on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year, including Christmas.  The waiting lines outside restaurants are longer than any other occasion during the year.  And, many of us spend more time stressing over what to give our moms on her special day than we do for her birthday or for Christmas.

If there is one thing to remember when considering that special Mother’s Day gift it is that our moms know us better than we know ourselves.  That means that those special ladies know when the gift has real meaning and when it is a last minute thought.

When considering the best Mother’s Day gift ideas of the year, it is important to consider your age — not your mother’s age — and what you can comfortably afford to give her.  In other words, gifts should be age appropriate from the child giving the gift.  Gifts should not be so extravagant that Mom will be reluctant to accept it.

Young mothers know that the toddlers did not buy her a new outfit or a bracelet.  Moms also know that her young children enjoy making things for both Mom and Dad.  This is the perfect time for Dad to offer a little assistance with the younger ones, helping them create the drawing for Mom or maybe helping them paint an apron.  Dad can help select Mom’s favorite colors, but the artwork should be the creation of the child.

Teens should not spend more than they can earn on a gift for Mom.  Mothers have a way of knowing when dad has footed the bill.  Of course, dads once again can help out with the selection by offering to pay a part of the cost of the gift.  Teens can create an extra special gift that costs less than $10 with a little creativity.

For those of us who really want to make our mothers feel extra special on Mother’s Day, we should give a gift that is affordable and age appropriate.  Mothers will remember the gift forever and appreciate the thought more than the price of the gift.

Light your Garden to set a Mood

Getting the most out of a landscape often involves focusing on the perfect lawn, beautiful flowerbeds, exotic plants and stonework. We devote a great deal of our energy to achieving both form and function, often at great expense, but what about when the Sun goes down? Do you just light up the areas of your garden you’ll occupy or do you go the extra mile and paint all that beautiful work with light?

Landscape lighting should always be approached with more than just utilitarian objectives in mind. As important as your grill and seating areas may be, they really are just functional. That beautiful shade tree or those ornamental plants deserve some after-hours love too, don’t they?

Using landscaping lights to bring out all that hard work at night does more than just call attention to your projects. It’s an entirely different world and mood after dark and you can use various lighting techniques to create a setting entirely unrealized during the day.

Moon-lighting, at least in terms of landscaping, isn’t about a spare job. It is the technique of mounting lights up in trees so that the light shines down through the branches. The resulting shadows and pool of light are absolutely magical, giving the tree and illuminated ground an enchanted forest look. Put a bench under the tree and you have a wonderful spot that entices guests to explore beyond the confines of your patio to chat in an intimate and inviting setting.

If your property is of sufficient size, use path lighting or tiki torches to invite guests to explore further into your garden. Guide them to your show plants, statuary and hidden nooks where they can chat (or cuddle) away from the crowd around the grill.

Speaking of statuary, any dramatic stonework or statue can benefit from up-lighting. Be careful to choose flattering lighting angles so as not to create a “Frankenstein” effect. For stonework or masonry, light plants so they cast dramatic shadows or angle the illumination to bring out the texture of the stone.

Finally, when placing any lighting don’t just pay attention to what you want to illuminate but also what you don’t want to illuminate. If your light spills over onto utilities, air conditioners, power lines and the like you’ll be calling attention to elements that only serve to destroy the mood you want to set. Tiki or patio torches will rarely cause this problem as it will only cast light so far, but a low-voltage landscape light should be placed and aim as much with shadow in mind as light.

Pool Toys are a Must Have for every Pool

Like many people who own pools, you have probably poured thousands of dollars into keeping your pool looking its best.  The overwhelming cost of owning a pool seems to increase with each passing year.  Just keeping the pool clear from algae and debris is a job and an expense within itself.  It is no wonder that considering the current economic climate many are considering cutting back on things they purchase for their pool and even thinking about keeping their pools closed all together.

One area that is certainly going to suffer this year is: pool toys and pool floats.  However, I would argue that these are two of the most important aspects to any swimming pool.  If you are going to open your pool, you should open with one purpose in mind, to enjoy it.  Otherwise, it will be a burden upon you both mentally and financially.  Aside from the financial strain a pool can cause, there is a lot of time and energy that goes into it as well.  Knowing this, you should only open your pool if you are going to be able to enjoy it.  In other words, don’t skimp on the pool toys and pool floats.

I personally believe that pool toys and floats can make or break your pool experience.  If there is nothing to do in your pool and it is boring you are never going to want to go in it thus making owning and operating a pool a pointless endeavor.  Consider turning things lying around the house into pool toys.  There are many things that can be turned into pool toys.  For example, old soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs make great pool toys.  They float on top of the water and do not require any set up.  However, when you are looking for things around the house to convert into pool toys you are going to want to avoid things that could damage your pool.  Anything with sharp edges or that could possibly cut the lining of your pool would obviously be poor choices.  Safety is another area of concern when looking for pool toys.  The last thing you want to bring into your pool is something that could be potentially dangerous.  After all, pools are meant to be fun.  Whether you decide to buy new pool toys or use old ones remember that with the right toys your pool is more fun.

Fixing a Clogged Sink: Tips from an Atlanta Plumber

Having a clogged sink can be a royal pain unless you know how to fix it on your own. Thankfully you don’t have to be an Atlanta plumber like myself to get this job done correctly. Before going out and spending a lot of money, try some good home remedies, it could save you hundreds.

There’s a big difference in a small clog and a large or permanent one. If you first try a rubber plunger just to apply suction to the drain and the water begins to go down fast, you’ve solved a very simple problem!

If you try to unclog the drain and the plunger does not work successfully, your next attempt is a little bit trickier. Get a large bucket and under the sink, place the bucket under the U section of your pipe. With a wrench, remove the U bend portion of the pipe. Clean out the U portion of the pipe with very hot water and a cleaning solution making sure you get out all the junk from the inside. Next , clean the insides of the open pipes under the sink with a cloth and maybe some sort of a bottle brush, cleaning out all the dirt and grime have attached themselves to the pipe.

Next, you can replace the U pipe and connect everything back together, tightening everything up really secure so that you don’t have any leaks. You can use some caulking around the joints if you want to for extra precaution.

Last, you can test the pipe by running very hot water, making sure that there are no leaks and that the water is running through the drains. If everything works well, cleaning your pipes after the job is done is always a good idea. Mixing a simple solution of disinfectant and some very hot water and pouring it down the drain is an effective cleaner. These basic plumbing tips can make the difference between a simple manageable repair, and a large out of pocket expense.

None of this very hard and you’ve saved the cost of hiring a plumber!

Using a 3M Pop Up Gazebo

Pop up gazebos are available in many different sizes and so can be used at a whole range of outdoor events. From the smallest portable gazebos frequently used at garden parties and barbecues hosted by private residents, to the huge commercial gazebos for corporate events, festivals and charity fundraisers, there is a pop up gazebo that will be suitable for any customer. One of the most popular sizes is the 3M pop up gazebo as it meets the needs of many events organisers and private citizens alike, however large or small their budgets and guest lists may be.

The 3m X 3m size is perfect for use in private residential gardens. It is big enough to fit in all but the smallest gardens and is capable of sheltering many guests at once. There will also often be room for a food or drinks table underneath the gazebo as well, providing that not too many people are using it. Gazebos of this size are also very often seen at larger events where many more guests will be in attendance. It is common for small sheltered areas to be required for just a few people, such as at festivals or other events where food or drink may be served. 3M gazebo can also be used in conjunction with other models that are the same size, this allows the user to create a large sheltered area of any size or shape.

Gazebos can be purchased cheaply from many retailers. Because of the simplicity and ease of use offered by the easy pop up gazebo design, competition between the sellers of these products is high. This reduces prices. The internet is the best place to begin looking if you want to find the best deals on these structures. Online retailers will have the widest product ranges on offer, and usually at lower prices than high street home and garden centres.

A Home Improvement Experts Guide To Purchasing A Conservatory.

There is no doubt that home improvement experts know their business when it comes to purchasing and erecting a conservatory on their property.  In a survey carried out with home improvement enthusiasts and DIY experts, the following points were made with regard to purchasing conservatories.

An expert in home improvement will never assume that planning permission will not be necessary for a conservatory.  It may be that planning is not required, but the expert will heck this out with the local planning authority and get the reply in writing, to avoid later confusion.

When they are working out floor space desired in the proposed conservatory, the DIY experts will always work from internal measurements.  They will mark out these measurement where the conservatory is proposed to be built and will ensure that they have enough space.

They will also go to the effort of erecting small cardboard barriers to represent the dwarf walls of the proposed conservatory and will sit down behind these barriers to ensure that their view will not be obscured if the conservatory does get built.

The DIY enthusiast will not automatically select the cheapest quote as being the best.  They will compare quotes with regard to price, the quality of the materials being used, and the reputation of the builder that has quoted.  They know that the cheapest is not always the best value.

It is important to make the effort to blend the new conservatory in with the existing residence.  A home improvement enthusiast will find some similar bricks that were used to construct the main residence and will use them in the conservatory, or will incorporate some other feature of the residence into the construction of the new addition.

Finally, the DIY enthusiast will ensure that the heating pipes in the conservatory are ducted and can be accessed easily.  To cover them with concrete could mean an expensive locating exercise at a later date, should problems occur.

Buying A Weatherguard Greenhouse

Anyone with a green thumb can appreciate the helping hand that technology can lend in the garden. Many types of tools are available to help gardeners get the most out of their time and money. Perhaps one of the handiest tools available is a greenhouse. Greenhouses are designed to provide a safe haven for your plants to grow, no matter what time of the year it is. Inside, the perfect combination of moisture, heat and light helps plants to grow to their full potential. Plants in your garden can be exposed to harsh sunlight and temperatures. A greenhouse regulates these factors to take the strain off of your plants. A great model is called the Weatherguard Greenhouse. It has plenty of room inside (6 by 12 feet) and is lightweight.

This greenhouse is very sturdy and can support heavy hanging plants. A triple ridge roof system ensures that you can hang plants to your heart’s content. The steel construction will provide many years of reliable use.  Setup is easy, simple slide the pieces together and you’re ready to go. Wind can be a problem for most greenhouses, but the Weatherguard model features galvanized feet that can be bolted to a foundation so it won’t blow over. You get 72 square feet of maneuvering space inside. You can place shelves, pots, troughs and supplies inside. This system allows consumers to have their own flourishing garden in their backyard.

Zippered screen vents and crossed side ventilation allow full control over the humidity and air flow inside. The lightweight construction means that it can be moved from place to place as needed. A front zippered door allows for quick access to all your plants. Vented windows allow air in while keeping out pests. This all-in-one greenhouse solution is one of the easiest ones to use. Info about other types of greenhouses can be found here. If you are looking for a place to store your gardening tools, consider using a steel shed.

Nerdy Birthday Party Ideas

Planning a birthday party for the nerd in your life?  It can be pretty tough since there are so many things that you can do.  With that in mind, I want to share some of the things that people have done for me on my birthday (yeah, I’m a nerd) that have been a whole lot of fun.

I think that the most fun that I’ve had on a birthday party was going to laser tag.  It was the epitome of nerdy exercise and we all had a blast.  There’s something about pretending that you’re a Stormtrooper and blasting your friends that makes it so much fun!

Another common theme for nerd birthday parties is video games.  There have been a few years where everyone brought over a TV and their Xbox and we all hooked up to play Halo or Guitar Hero.  This is absolutely nerdy, but we all had a really good time.  Just be sure to order pizza and have a lot of soda and energy drinks on hand to keep the party going, or don’t to make sure that the party ends quickly!

There was a year when someone had a Star Wars cake pan and baked me a Boba Fett cake.  I knew that these cake molds were rare and very hard to find at a good price, so this was very special to me.  They spent the time to bake and decorate the cake very well, which made it even cooler.  If you have the means and the skills to get a cake like this, I highly recommend it.

With so many different options it’s hard to figure out exactly what to do.  These three things are what helped me have some of the best nerdy birthday parties ever, and I hope that they can help you out as well.
