Acne scars occur as a result of immune system reactions caused by acne.   It is believed that most acne scars are as a result of severe acne, usually nodules and cysts located in deeper layers of the skin.

Collagen injections are a scar treatment where collagen is injected underneath the top layer of skin.  The collagen has the effect of stretching and lifting certain types of scars.  Collagen that comes from cows can’t be used by people who suffer from auto-immune diseases.

Not all scars can be treated by this method. It normally doesn’t work very well for ice-pick scars and keloids.  Collagen treatments of scars are not permanent, and the treatment must be repeated approximately twice a year.  Collagen injections can have side effects including allergic reactions in some people.
