Medical Treatment of Menopause

Since menopause isn’t really a disease, it doesn’t need any medicalchick photo treatment. But, even though menopause itself doesn’t require treatment, some of its symptoms can be so severe that they can begin to impact both health and quality of life. Some of the more extreme symptoms of menopause that may need actual medical treatment are hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety and depression.

Night sweats can be especially disruptive not only because they are unpleasant but they then don’t allow you to get a good nights rest which can then exacerbate other problems such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, and memory loss. Currently the best treatments available for hot flashes and night sweats are low dose hormones, Gabapentin, and antidepressants. Gabapentin is used for the treatment of seizures and antidepressants are obviously used to treat depression but both have been found to help with hot flashes so it may be an option to discuss with your doctor.

In the case of anxiety and depression brought on by menopause, it’s important to consult with a doctor. Fortunately, there are several medications available that may provide relief.

For the vast majority of menopause symptoms like exhaustion, memory loss, mood swings, and muscle soreness there is no cure. All you can do is try to eat well, exercise, reduce stress and keep a sense of humor.
