When people go out to choose their new piece of furniture they rarely consider where the raw materials may have come from and this is a bit of a shame. There are quite a large number of furniture pieces that are still being made from wood that has come from old-growth forests. This is particularly so for hardwood furniture. It’s a dwindling resource and the continued use of this type of wood is affecting our environment.

The aim should be to make more people aware of the alternative option which is to start using more friendly to the environment wood such as plantation pine furniture. Although there are still some problems involved with plantation forests, it is a lot more preferable than large scale removal of huge chunks of the Earth’s rainforests.

There are ways to check whether the furniture you’re buying is made from plantation pine, in most cases there will be a label stating it. Alternatively you can ask where the wood came from. The more plantation wood we use, the less demand there will be for old-growth wood.
