Both the central hub of the Languedoc Roussilon and containing the capital city of the region, Montpellier, the department of the Herault has a lot going for it. Montpellier is a large sprawling city and the second most popular place to live, amongst the French, after Paris. The administrative centre of the Languedoc, this city has seen an explosion in it’s population over recent years. Blessed with a fine climate and located as it is, within 30 minutes of the Mediterranean coast, this is hardly surprising.
The centre of the city is a delight, with its old buildings and winding streets, but it’s suburbs which sprawl out a across a vast area are, frankly, a nightmare to navigate and less attractive. Once you have enjoyed the restaurants and shopping I would suggest traveling out and discovering the rest that the Herault department has to offer.
Head to the coast with it’s holiday resorts and old fishing villages or to some of the other enchanting towns like Agde, Sete or Pezenas.

I was looking forward to seeing a big fireworks show in Seaside Heights this weekend. No dice. They don’t start doing this until July and even then they are held weekly on Wednesday nights. Not the weekends (expect for 4th of July).
It had been so long since I had been to Seaside that I only remembered the fireworks but not when they had them. For some reason I had it in my head that they did this on big holiday weekends. Obviously I was totally wrong.
So instead of seeing that I just hung out with my peeps walking the boardwalk. It was fun to see all the people, the sights and sounds, and eat some really bad food. I even played Galaga and Asteriods in one of the arcades. I don’t even want to know how many hours I spent playing those two games when they had just come out. It was really funny that every arcade in Seaside Heights seemed to have these two machines. So no fireworks for me, just some old school video game playing.

Napa is the heart of the Napa Valley and Wine Country. Unfortunately, most people drive right through Napa and head more north to St. Helena and Calistoga. They are missing many of the great things to do in Downtown Napa. There are choices for every member of the family. Great food, great wine, and shopping are all available here. These may be common themes in the Napa Valley, but no where are you going to find them as concentrated as here in the downtown. There are great parks to hang out in, a firefighter museum and much more. There are five independent wine tasting rooms all within walking distance of each other, and a great cab system to get you home safely without worrying about driving.
